Africa Re Commissions New Corporate Headquarters in Abuja as part of its 50th Anniversary

The African Reinsurance Corporation (Africa Re) has officially commissioned its new corporate headquarters in Abuja, Nigeria, marking a major institutional milestone in the Corporation’s 50-year journey. The new headquarters reaffirms Africa Re’s long-term confidence in Africa’s future, in Nigeria as its host country, and in the continued growth and strength of African institutions.

The inauguration ceremony, held on 24 June 2026 as part of Africa Re’s 50th anniversary commemorations, brought together senior government officials, ambassadors, representatives of international organisations, shareholders, board members, business leaders, and partners from across Africa and beyond. The official commissioning sequence included a ribbon-cutting ceremony, plaque unveiling, guided walkthrough and remarks by the Guest of Honour, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, represented by the Honourable Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Taiwo Oyedele.

Located in Abuja’s Central Business Area on Ralph Shodeinde Street, beside the Federal Ministry of Finance and adjacent to the newly inaugurated Afreximbank regional headquarters, the new building is an eleven-storey Grade A corporate facility designed to embody Africa Re’s ambition, resilience and enduring institutional presence on the continent. More than a change of address, the new headquarters represents the fulfilment of a long-term strategic vision rooted in Africa Re’s Pan-African mandate and in its enduring relationship with Nigeria, a founding member country that has hosted the Corporation since 1978.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Mr. Moustapha Coulibaly, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Africa Re, said the project fulfilled a promise made to shareholders and member states and reflected the Corporation’s determination to provide a befitting headquarters for a Pan-African institution built through decades of sacrifice, resilience and vision. He noted that while Africa Re began operations in a modest apartment in Accra in 1977, it has since grown into a billion-dollar reinsurer and a globally credible African institution, now standing in a headquarters that reflects both its journey and its future ambitions. “This 11-storey building was conceived as more than a workplace. It is an “espace de vie,” a vibrant living environment designed to promote wellbeing, collaboration, productivity, and community,” he said.

In remarks delivered on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Guest of Honour, Mr. Taiwo Oyedele described the new headquarters as both a major investment and a symbol of what African institutions can achieve when guided by conviction, continuity and belief in African capacity. He stated that beyond its architectural significance, the story of Africa Re is a reminder of “the potential in us as Africans.” He praised the Corporation for its contributions to Nigeria’s economic development through financial resource mobilisation, job creation, capacity building and corporate social responsibility initiatives. And he stated, “Africa Re is the typical example of an African home-grown champion. Our duty as leaders is to ensure that we maintain the momentum in the fight for African economic liberation and pass the baton on to the next generation.”

Dr. Corneille Karekezi, Group Managing Director and CEO of Africa Re, emphasised that the new headquarters is not simply an architectural achievement, but a strategic asset designed to support the Corporation’s next phase of growth and impact across the continent. He noted that the building’s design, location and environmental performance reflect Africa Re’s ambition to remain at the forefront of African reinsurance while deepening its contribution to financial stability, market development and economic transformation in Africa. And he said: “Today, we are not merely inaugurating a building. We are bringing to life a vision. We are celebrating the foresight of our founders, the dedication of generations of staff and leaders, and the confidence that our shareholders and partners have placed in this institution over the years. This headquarters reflects the strength of the Corporation, the ambition of its people and our confidence in the future.”

Inspired by what has been described as “Contemporary African Corporate Modernism”, the new headquarters expresses openness, dynamism and confidence, while projecting the institutional maturity of a pan-African organisation entering a new phase of its history. Conceived as a modern, distinctive and sustainable landmark, the building aligns architectural form with Africa Re’s corporate identity and long-term strategic ambition, giving tangible shape to the Corporation’s role as a leading African financial institution.

Designed to the highest international standards of quality, efficiency and occupant comfort, the headquarters embodies Africa Re’s commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable development. It has been conceived with the ambition of achieving LEED Gold Certification, integrating renewable solar energy systems, a high-performance glass-curtain façade that reduces heat gain and energy consumption, and advanced rainwater and wastewater treatment systems that support water recycling for landscape irrigation. Interior office floors have been purpose-built for flexibility, with raised flooring, modular partition systems, ergonomic fittings and carefully curated African artworks and décor that celebrate contemporary African elegance and the cultural richness of the continent Africa Re serves.

Conceived as more than a workplace, the new headquarters has been envisioned as a vibrant living environment designed to support wellbeing, collaboration, productivity and community. Equipped with state-of-the-art high-tech systems and amenities including a high-end restaurant, an international-standard gym, dedicated children’s facilities, and elevated hanging gardens, the building underlines Africa Re’s confidence in African-led solutions and its readiness to continue strengthening insurance and reinsurance markets across the continent. Marking fifty years since its establishment in Yaounde in 1976, the commissioning of this landmark headquarters signals continuity between Africa Re’s founding mission, retaining reinsurance premiums within Africa and reducing structural dependence on foreign markets, and its future direction as one of the continent’s strongest financial institutions.
